B2B SEO Frequently Asked Questions

What is B2B SEO?

The simple explanation: B2B SEO (Business-to-Business Search Engine Optimization) is the work of getting a website found on search engines for the topics other businesses are searching for.
The audience is narrower than in consumer SEO and the buying decision takes longer. The work covers three things: the pages themselves, the way the site is built, and the links and mentions that point at it. In practice most of it goes into the organic results, the unpaid listing a search engine puts up on its own.

Why is B2B SEO important for your B2B business?

B2B SEO matters because it puts a company in front of buyers while they are still looking for solutions for their pain point, which is the stage when a shortlist for vendors gets formed. A business that shows up then gets considered. Ranking higher on a search engine results page (SERP) is not the point in itself. The point is reaching the businesses who are already looking for something you sell.

B2B buyers research online before they talk to sales. Paid advertising stops sending visitors the moment the budget stops, while a page that earns its place keeps sending them for as long as it holds that place.

How can B2B companies optimize their website for search engines?

Three jobs, in this order.

  • Find the pain points of your buyers. Write down the phrases a potential customer would type when they have the problem you solve. Check those phrases against your own site before you write anything new.
  • Fix the page. Titles, meta descriptions and header tags tell a search engine what a page is about. Most sites have pages where these do not match the content, or are missing.
  • Fix the shape of the site. A clear structure and navigation help a search engine work out which page is the main one on a subject and which pages support it.

Does B2B SEO still matter when AI gives the answer?

Yes, but the job has changed. Google’s own documentation says its AI features are built on the same ranking and quality systems as normal search, and that they retrieve current pages from the same index.

The cost is real. Pew Research Center found that when an AI summary appeared, people clicked a traditional result in about 8% of visits, against about 15% when no summary appeared, and only about 1% clicked a link inside the summary. Ahrefs put the drop in clicks to the top-ranking page at 58%. Neither number is a reason to stop. They are a reason to stop counting only the clicks.

Pew also found that 18% of the searches it studied produced an AI summary, and 88% of those drew on three or more sources. Ahrefs found that only 38% of pages cited in AI summaries also ranked in the classic top ten for the exact search. An answer is usually assembled from several pages, and it is often assembled from pages that do not hold the top spot.

That is the change. Fewer clicks per search is the honest cost. Being one of the sources the answer is built from is the strategy. A B2B site earns a place among those sources the same way it always earned rankings: pages that cover a topic properly and link to each other, so a search engine can find them and understand them.

What are some basic principles for B2B SEO strategy?

These are my basic rules for creating a B2B SEO strategy:
→ Start with understanding the buyer persona or ICP
→ Document the buyer’s journey to the best of your ability. This is foundational work that guides the overall strategy for your content.
→ Uncover institutional knowledge from your sales team, and
→ Map out the core topics.
→ Create a content strategy that provides content for all stages of the buyer’s journey.
→ Then check the rest: on-page work, links from other sites, and the technical side, meaning crawlability, page speed, and the structure of the site.

Buyer persona example: a written profile of one type of buyer, showing the role, the problems that bring them to search, and the questions they ask

What is the role of content in B2B SEO?

Content is what a search engine has to work with. A B2B buyer who lands on a page that answers their question stays, reads another page, and comes back later in the buying process. A site that does that across a whole subject area earns visibility over time.

Publishing a page is the halfway point. Email marketing and social channels put it in front of the people who were never going to search for it.

What are the common mistakes to avoid in B2B SEO?

Some common mistakes to avoid in B2B SEO include:

  • Skipping keyword research. Target the wrong phrases and you can spend a year building pages nobody searches for.
  • Skipping on-page work. Titles, headings and descriptions tell a search engine what each page is about. Without that, good pages sit unread.
Schema markup example: a short block of code on a page that labels the content on it, for example marking a question and its answer, so search engines and AI features can read it

Example of an often neglected on-page optimization factor schema markup

  • Publishing for volume. Ten thin pages on one subject compete with each other. Two pages that cover it properly do not.

What is the importance of link building in B2B SEO?

A link from another site is a vote. Search engines read those votes when they decide how much to trust a page, which is why links move rankings. Not all votes count the same. A link from a site that covers your subject is worth more than a link from a directory nobody reads, and a page of links sold in bulk can drag a site down.

Backlinks from high authority domains: several well-known sites pointing to one page, against a single link from a low quality directory

Focus on backlinks from Domains with high domain authority

The links that hold up come from people who already know the work: partners, suppliers, trade publications, and anyone who cites a page because it answered something.

One of the most underutilized techniques is internal link building. Links within your own site. Look at Wikipedia, the unsung hero of internal link structures. There is a reason why it became so important and successful.
If you want to gain authority to a certain topic you should create Content Hubs.

What is the role of analytics in B2B SEO?

Analytics tell you which pages are being found, which ones are being read, and which ones are being ignored. Google Analytics shows what people do once they arrive. Google Search Console shows the searches that brought them. Read the two together and you can see which pages are close to working and worth the next round of effort.

Put the review in the calendar. A monthly hour is enough, and it is the difference between a strategy and a one-off project.

What is the impact of mobile optimization on B2B SEO?

Google indexes the mobile version of a page first, so the phone layout is the version most people will ever see, and the one a search engine reads by default. B2B buyers read on a phone between meetings. If the page is slow, or the text runs off the screen, they leave before the form loads.

How long does it take to see results from B2B SEO?

Months, not weeks. How long depends on how crowded your subject is and how much of the work is already done. Some pages move in a few months. A competitive term can take a year. The first useful signal usually arrives before the rankings do: impressions in Search Console, then clicks on the pages you fixed.

A site with content only SEO and no backlinks: pages linking to each other inside the site, with no links arriving from anywhere else

Example for a site that has only content building as a SEO strategy without any initiative for backlinks

Plan for the long haul. The site that wins is the one that is still publishing on the same subject in year two.
